DESCRIPTION:Join us during February’s Benson First Friday art walk for an art exhibit by Dereck Higgins and Derek Shockey from 6:30pm-8:30pm\, and stay for a performance by The Good Gurls Burlesque Troupe at 9pm.  \nInformation about the artists: \nDereck Higgins\, born in Omaha comes from a musical/artistic family. Primarily a self taught musician known for his bass playing skills but plays several instruments. Has been involved in a wide variety of bands and musical styles (rock\, jazz\, punk\, electronic\, funk\, etc.) starting in the 70’s. Bands include Norman & the Rockwells\, Digital Sex\, RAF\, Disco Ranch\, InDreama\, Son Ambulance\, Cleemann and Rikk Agnew Fiasco. Has performed throughout the USA\, Europe and Japan and opened for or played with artists such as REM\, The Dead Kennedys\, Ken Vandermark\, Tatsuya Nakatani\, Weird Al Yankovic\, Melt Banana\, 7 Seconds\, Toxic Reasons\, NOFX and Laraaji. Recently started a record label (DVH Recordings) with 8 titles released so far to a small but worldwide fan base. Dereck creates much of the visual art on his records. Has also done wardrobe creation and supervision for film (Lovely Still\, April Showers\, The Scientist).  \nDerek Shockey:\n“I paint stuff”\nThough I’ve worked as a full-time artist for several years now\, I’ve yet to come up with a proper statement or thesis. I find the concept in itself difficult. I mean\, to attempt to apply some all-encompassing theme\, concept or clear\, distant goal to my body of work\, to me\, seems not only daunting\, but quite limiting in many ways. I’ve found that most of my goals change with each series of work\, as does the inspiration\, the technique\, the medium\, etc…. not to mention my perception of the world around me.\n​Instead\, I try to view most of my work as study. Through these studies I’m able to work out various aspects of color\, contrast\, composition\, texture\, line\, space\, medium and technique in preparation for my masterpiece… that will someday reveal itself to me.\nInfluences include Mark Rothko\, Roberto Matta\, Gerard Richter\, Jean-Michel Basquiat & Egon Schiele. \nThe Good Gurls are a burlesque performance troupe based out of Omaha\, Nebraska. Aerials\, fire dancing\, hooping\, strip tease and so much more!

DESCRIPTION:A collaboration between two dynamic and artistic individuals\, bringing a universal vibration with their music. Aaryon is best known as an international basketball player and visual artist. It turns out that he has been singing for 20 years\, starting in church. Dereck has a long history of involvement in music worldwide\, playing many genres from punk to jazz to ambient. Their paths crossed through involvement with the visual arts community in Omaha and a mutual love for music and philosophy was discovered. Aaryon chose to call the collaboration ‘The Door’ with the idea of the door being a portal\, an invitation. Also the notion that if one door closes\, another will open. Check out their first album performed live at The B Side of the Benson Theatre on Valentine’s Day! The melodious sounds of Johnna Dortch & Steven Kay Lanier will be opening acts before The Door will take the stage for a truly emotional\, dynamic performance–LOVERS & COUPLES WELCOMED!! DESCRIPTION:The House of Afros\, Capes & Curls (HOACC) is a social organization whose goal is to connect people from diverse backgrounds and build a community based on a shared love of science fiction\, fantasy\, gaming and Afrofuturism. Through game nights\, community events\, our community blog and podcast\, we share a safe space to explore our favorite hobbies and geek culture without ethnic boundaries. On Friday\, February 16\, 2018\, Marvel Studios will release its movie\, Black Panther. HOACC\, in partnership with Alamo Drafthouse Cinema\, Omaha Small Business Network\, No More Empty Pots\, Eastern Nebraska Community Action Partnership\, local artists and community members\, will host a movie premiere event that provides a place to embrace and celebrate the Black Culture represented in this film. The timing of this movie release provides a great opportunity to reinforce the importance of diversity\, representation\, and resiliency in Omaha.
